Rice Cooker Cake

Recently I've become obsessed with things you can cook in the rice cooker that aren't, per se, rice. Like the Tomato Rice recipe. But this is a completely different animal--cake! I opted for the easiest option and used Bisquick pancake mix. My rice cooker is very small so I used the smallest amount and two cycles in the rice cooker. With a blueberry/lemon zest sauce it was amazing!

Tomato Rice

Before:

After:

I'm sure everybody has already done this and I'm the late one to the party, but I just discovered Tomato Rice which you can make in your rice cooker! You cut the stem/core out of your tomato(es), put them open side down into the rice and water, and then you can add other things, like sliced mushrooms, green onions, garlic powder, olive oil, and herbs. In mine I was running low on groceries so I have sliced ginger with my two tomatoes, and a splash of olive oil. You can substitute with a can of diced tomatoes too, which works perfectly well.

It may be my new favorite way to cook rice--it's more moist and flavorful this way and it really makes the rice like a side dish.

Parallels

This weekend I attended an (online) seminar on the White Nationalist Movement in Montana from 1980-2015, and they had this slide about how the Far-Right operates. I thought it was very similar to Trump's playbook.

FO- Cabled sweater

I did a Classic Raglan Pullover from Barbara G. Walker's Knitting from the Top Down, using Reverse Staghorn Cable down the front and Little Plait Cable down the arms. The sweater has a little bit of waist shaping so it's more fitted than the striped sweater that I knit. Additionally, I dropped the stitches up to the cast-on edge when I began my cables and redid them so that the purling started at the very top rather than as I started the cables. It has twisted ribbing along the waist and an I-cord neck band. The sweater did not take too long, even with all of the cables, and has encouraged me to perhaps knit myself an aran sweater someday!

Stripey Sweater

This sweater was supposed to use up the leftover bits of yarn I had from knitting some baby sweaters but after separating for sleeves, I feared I would run out of the light pink and teal colors, so I ordered one skein of teal and four of pink.... only to finish the sweater and not need any of it! So much for getting rid of leftovers. As you can see, this sweater has no waist shaping. I knit it rather oversized in the hopes that it will fit for longer. Somebody is due for a growth spurt though, so I guess we'll see. Yarn was Knitpicks Mighty Stitch.

Caviar

Separating the roe from the egg sac.

Soaking in the salt solution.

Golden is salmon caviar, orange (to the side) is trout.

DH has been fishing recently and I came across a recipe to turn the roe into caviar. Basically, after separating the roe from a membrane sacks, you soak it in a salt water solution (1/2c kosher salt to 1L water) for 10 minutes. The results have been fantastic and now whenever we have a fish with roe in it, it won't be wasted!
